CHOOSE

“But if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve…. But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.”

JOSHUA 24:15 NIV

Under God’s mighty hand, Joshua led the Israelites into the Promised Land. Toward the end of his life, he assembled the people together and shared the story of the Lord’s deliverance. Then he laid out the choice that was before them. Joshua set an example by emphatically proclaiming his allegiance to the Lord.

We, too, must choose whom we will serve. The truth is, we all serve something. We may serve careers, money, appearance, or even relationships. Although we may not admit it, we become slaves to whatever we choose to serve. Jesus warns us in Matthew 6:24 that we cannot serve two masters. We will hate the one and love the other, or we will be devoted to the one and despise the other. Here Jesus was referring to money, but our idol could be anything.

Who or what captivates your thoughts, motivates your actions, or inspires your passions? Whom do you love with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength? What has your heart’s allegiance?

Let’s get more specific. What keeps you from attending church? What gets in the way of reading the Bible? What prevents you from obeying the Lord? The answer to these difficult questions reveals what we have chosen to serve. Let’s follow Joshua’s example by choosing to serve the Lord with all that we have!

Dear Lord, forgive me for choosing to serve anything other than You. Help me to faithfully love You. Amen.
